365 Days of Halloween

By Johanna Atilano

It's astounding... Time is fleeting...

Madness takes its toll...

It is Monday morning, August 24, 2009, as fans begin to line up behind The Globe Theatre at Universal Studios Hollywood to audition for the newest addition to Halloween Horror Nights - "Rocky Horror Picture Show: A Tribute".

Based on the 1975 theatrical release The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Halloween Horror Nights is bringing the cult classic musical to Hollywood to entertain guests with dynamic dance numbers and outrageous costumes.  Performers were invited to the open casting to audition for the key roles from the film including Dr. Frank N Furter, Riff Raff, and Magenta - a few showing up already dressed as their favorite character.

During the wait, a number of characters from the film walked around to entertain and encourage everyone.  One man, dressed as my personal favorite from the movie - Dr. Frank N Furter - had the full package - the hair, the high heels, and the infamous pearl necklace.  He painfully strutted in seven-inch heels, occasionally singing loudly and wiggling his hips - leaving everyone with a smirk on their face.

It's just a jump to the left...

The laughs and smiles begin to subdue as people begin to walk into the theater.  The temperature in the room was morgue cold as everyone plunked into an almost hypnotic state.  It was time for everyone to get in the zone.  Stretches began and the dance routine for "Time Warp" started being taught when minutes away, the real auditions would start...

The hopefuls were called into the audition room and had a practice routine with the choreographer in front of the judges.  Once done, a minimum of 8 contenders were picked out of the group to perform the dance routine twice.  The enthusiasm was amazing with each group - you could really feel the amount of energy and dedication put into the audition.  The intense energy from each individual was outstanding.  You could actually feel their eagerness; sharp movements, strong facial expressions, and of course - having fun.  Once in a while between auditions, you'd see a smile come across the judges' faces - a hint that says yes, they enjoyed your performance, and YES, you may get the part.  In the background, many watched intently and practiced the routine until their number was called.  One by one, each group finished their audition, and the feeling of relief was felt throughout the whole theater.

And nothing can ever be the same...

With the amount of pelvic thrusts and jumping to the left, no one came out of the room that did NOT have "Time Warp" permanently stamped in their minds.  I, for one, have become a new Rocky Horror fan.  I have no idea if that is a good thing or bad thing...

In closing, good luck to everyone that auditioned.  Theme Park Adventure enjoyed your performances and will see many familiar faces on October 2, 2009, at Halloween Horror Nights!
