| AN ON-THE-SCENE ACCOUNT BY BRANDON GASILAN |
| As each
Haunt season comes around, it is that time again for returning talent to
come and re-claim their spots, or move onto bigger and better things.
Street talent have there own hiring event, as do the returning maze
talent from the previous year. But what to do with folks that did
not work the event the previous year, or ever in their lives? That
is why there is a New Hire event! This special day is when people
who are interested in becoming part of the Haunt family come and apply
to get a position at this year's Halloween Haunt. But it is not the same as any other job hiring events. Get up, get ready, go and apply and see if you got the job; that is the normal way to do things. But New Hire is bit different. It's more along the lines of, come the day before, set up your chair and cooler, wait... and wait... and wait... socialize with other would-be monsters, wait some more... and wait... try to fight back the urge to fall asleep... wait some more, and then go into Knott's Employment Center the next morning to apply. Did I mention A LOT of waiting? The New Hire Event for 2008 was way bigger than it was in 2007. In '07, there must have been about 40 people in line by 5:00 A.M., with the earliest person getting there at 12:00 P.M. the previous day. For '08, there were about 150 people by 5:00 A.M., with the first person arriving at 7:00 A.M. the day before. Even though waiting in line, sitting in a chair all day and all night can seem boring, camping out for New Hire is an experience in itself. It is a great time to introduce yourself to other folks who are trying to snag a position, and also a great time to start new friendships and bonds. A lot of streets/maze monsters showed up the night before to see who was camping in front of the Employment office and also to meet and greet incoming talent. Even though I already have my position at Haunt for '08, I was there to support my good friend Matt while he waited to get a position. By the way, HE was that very first person at 7:00 A.M. Soon after, more and more people started to show up and set up their base area. It was interesting to see what kind of people were about to join the Family. Most of them were excited to get a position at the world's greatest Halloween party, while some didn't know quite what the were getting themselves into. But overall, everyone seemed to be having a good time camping out. Lots of people introduced themselves to each other and lots of people were there to support all the incoming monsters. After the long day of sitting in front of the Employment Center, they opened the doors to beginning taking applications around 8:15 A.M. or so. Soon, the mad rush to get an application in started as people took there seats, waiting to hear their names be called over the loud speaker. Haunt 2008 is going to a great year for fresh talent. From what I was told/heard, new and fresh talent is going to be spread out through all of the mazes this year. So as the last guys and gals turn in the applications and get their positions, the New Hire event which all of them were looking forward to had come and gone. Now all they have to do is go home, start to get what they need for the season, and wait... and wait... and wait some more. By now, they should have had lots of practice! |
