33rd Annual Halloween Haunt (C) Knott's

It seems like just yesterday, we said goodbye to Halloween Haunt 2004... actually, wait.. we did just say goodbye!  Regardless of our own schedule here at Theme Park Adventure, time rolls on and so here we are - full-circle, once again.

This year's coverage is going to be fantastic, as our readers have come to expect from TPA.  There will be maze reviews, show reviews, exclusive pictures and yes, even some videos from this year's Haunt for everyone to share and enjoy.

2005 brings some changes - to both the Scary Farm as well as to how Theme Park Adventure covers this annual event.  Just what those changes are at the Farm - well, look for new mazes and new shows (and maybe one or two other surprises).  For us, this marks the first year that TPA will not attend Haunt during its opening week run.  Instead, we're going to be covering the event from October 5th - 9th, giving us the luxury of five full nights of coverage rather than the four we had to squeeze everything into during the 2004 season.

In addition, the mazes will be more "complete" during the second week of Haunt and the talent throughout the Farm will have gotten into the groove, with many of the weaker newbs dropping already; talent is always better the second week anyway - so we expect nothing but great scares and incredible madness from our friends in the fog!

As always now, our coverage of this world-famous Halloween event kicks off in the late summer with what is known as "Build."  This is when the mazes are painted and constructed; maze structures "going vertical" marks the beginning of the season for us - even though the sun's still in overdrive and the beaches are full of bountiful bikinis... oh God, those hot, hot bikinis stuffed to perfection with righteous, mouth-watering orbs of supple flesh that beg to be caressed.. played with and teas..

*Ahem*

And so, as summer sets and gets ready for its exit, we here at Theme Park Adventure find ourselves more than ready to welcome our favorite season.  A season of monsters and mayhem, mazes and unparalleled terror.  It's the time when candle lights flicker, where the air is deathly still.

Happy Haunts from ages past materialize, rising from their graves in Calico's Boot Hill - in search of blood, revenge and the best damn funnel cake in the world.

Get those shaker cans ready, kids - the fog machines are being prepped and Knott's Berry Farm is in the midst of transformation once again as Buena Park braces for the year's biggest event yet again... 2005 truly will be... The Scariest Homecoming On Earth!

Pre-Scare Dinner Information

During Halloween Haunt, there is only one place to rest in peace... The Knott's Berry Farm Resort Hotel.  The Hotel is the official hotel of Knott's Berry Farm and is located on park property.  No hassles with parking, no long walk to your car after a night of running for your life and easy access to all things Haunt!  This is the only way to go, folks - Theme Park Adventure recommends the Knott's Berry Farm Resort Hotel while visiting the Scary Farm.  It's a no-brainer (which is a good thing, because the undead wanna eat people with brains anyway...) and the only way to have a complete Halloween Haunt experience!

Click the logo above to book your room, find out about Haunt packages (as well as other year-round packages) and set your trip to the Scary Farm in stone for 2005!

Knott's will begin taking Halloween Haunt Pre-Scare and VIP Pre-Scare Dinner reservations Monday, September 5, 2005.  The phone number to make your reservations is: 714.220.5055.

There are two different types of Pre-Scare Dinners being offered for 2005.  The regular Pre-Scare Dinner is held in the "Black Lagoon" picnic area across the street from Knott's, close to Soak City.

The cost of the Pre-Scare Dinner is $11.95 plus tax and no credit card is required to book your reservation.  The available time slots for the Pre-Scare Dinner at the Black Lagoon are: 4:00 P.M., 4:30 P.M., 5:00 P.M., 5:30 P.M., 6:00 P.M. and 6:30 P.M.

The VIP Pre-Scare Dinner is served within Knott's Berry Farm, across from GhostRider.  The price of the VIP Pre-Scare is $15.95 plus tax.  A major credit card is needed, as you will be paying for your dinner when you call.  There are no refunds.  The available time slots for the VIP Pre-Scare Dinner are 5:00 P.M., 5:30 P.M. and 6:00 P.M.

IF Security has cleared the Farm prior to 6:30 P.M., it is possible that Pre-Scare Dinner guests may be allowed into Haunt early to experience the rides and attractions ahead of the general public.  There is no guarantee of this however on any given night.

You MUST have your Haunt ticket for that night to attend a Pre-Scare Dinner.  Pre-Scare Dinners are held each night of Halloween Haunt.

If you have any questions that have not been answered here or wish to hear the "official" Haunt line at Knott's, that phone number is 714.220.5200.  For Haunt information, follow the prompts when you call.  By the way, that's our own Kevin Horton who does the recording!

Our 2005 Haunt contest has come to an end, but we're leaving the questions and answers up for you to check out.  Also, we extend our congratulations to our three winners... there... it's extended and... God, it's huge...

Ahem... Thank you to all who answered and for those souls we're damning to the Scary Farm, go screaming into the night - and beware of all things that go bump in the dark!

Build 2005 - It All Started With A Scream

Heigh Ho!  It's off to work they go!  Painters are painting, designers are designing and builders are playing with their wood.  The first part of our comprehensive coverage of the Scary Farm kicks off with a look at the various mazes and decorations now going up in Buena Park.  Note that these images have been taken for Theme Park Adventure from public-only access areas of Knott's or its surrounding area.  No backstage images are used, nor are any of our images obtained incorrectly (i.e. hanging off the back of a GhostRider train while someone holds on to you while you snap images of what mazes are behind Ghost Town - that ain't allowed).

Monster X

What happens when a fan of Halloween Haunt makes the decision to cross the line - and become one of the monsters that roam the Scary Farm each October?  This season, the whispers in the fog become one voice - the voice of a fan-turned-monster, living out a dream and taking us along for the nightly terror trip through the darkness of Halloween Haunt...

Monster X

Camp Spooky - Captain Jack's Haunted Hideaway

Ahoy there, ye little buccaneers!  Camp Spooky has become the place where pirates roam, searchin' for the X that marks the spot and the booty to go with it!

For the first time ever, Theme Park Adventure will review Camp Spooky, Knott's offering during the day for small kids and families.  This year, the Grand Sierra Railroad will be transformed into a family-friendly maze where little pirates of all ages will roam and get themselves some buried treasure!  Arrrrrrrrrrrrr!

SCREAMY AWARDS 2005

One of the most anticipated pieces of Theme Park Adventure's Halloween Haunt coverage are our annual Screamy Awards.  Unveiled after each Haunt as part of the event's awards ceremony, TPA uses this video to showcase what we feel represents the best of the best at Knott's Scary Farm.

TPA Family Night

The scariest bunch of them all - THE FANS!  Each year, Theme Park Adventure readers gather as a group and enjoy the Haunt as a family.  It's fun, it's wild and it's definitely not for the faint of heart!  This is one crazy bunch-o-peeps!

Special Thanks

Our annual coverage of Knott's Halloween Haunt is a huge undertaking that takes a lot of cooperation and a tremendous amount of support.  Here, we take pause before bringing our 2005 coverage to a close, to thank those who have made all of this possible.

HAUNT 2005 MAZES:

RED MOON MASSACRE - Those lovable lupines have filled the Timber Mountain Log Ride once again and are ready to bark at the moon - the red moon.  Hold on to your loved ones and keep your hands inside the log as you careen through the pitch-black tunnels and race down flumes as you're attacked from all sides by creatures of the night.

This ain't some Zip-A-Dee-Do-Dah ride.

Red Moon Massacre

LORE OF THE VAMPIRE - Being sucked has never felt so good.  One of the most popular mazes at Halloween Haunt, Lore of the Vampire returns once again as the home of the sensual, crazed and absolutely wicked vampires of Knott's Scary Farm.  Travel into the realm of the underworld as these vamps hiss and kiss at you from the darkened shadows.

Bow down to the mighty Queen and stay a while in Club Blood, the vampires' very own party playground.  In fact, stay forever...

Lore of the Vampire

13 AXE MURDER MANOR - Some little crazed chick picked up herself an axe.  Some little crazy chick dealt out 40 whacks.  And now, the Haunt invites you into a brand-new maze for the Scary Farm.  Lucky 13 is the address - you will find it listed in the darkest, most vile parts of your imagination.

Come, kick up your feet and rest.  Take off your shoes, take off your coat.  And the residents of the Manor will take off the rest for you.  Piece by piece.

13 Axe Murder Manor

HATCHET HIGH - Those pesky kids!  Come on back to the ultimate rock 'n roll high school once again as the boys and girls raise hell and shake their pompoms only the way they can at Knott's!  Visit the science lab - trying not to become the main experiment.  Visit the cafeteria - and try not to become the main course.  Take a shower in the locker room - and try not to drop the soa... er, try not to become the football team's practice dummy.

Oh, and the prom.  You are going, so dress up!  The Prom Queen's expecting a special dance with you when you arrive...

Hatchet High

CARNIVAL OF CARNIVOROUS CLOWNS (3D) - Those clowns, those clowns, those clowns!  Big, tall, massive, small - we love 'em all!  Come one, come all to the big top to witness the most insane, sick and twisted clowns to ever roam the Scary Farm.  You'll laugh and cry - you'll puke your guts and pee your pants as the funny folks in clown white dance, dance, dance!

All of the madness and mayhem is waiting for you, dear fan!  So STEP RIGHT UP!

Carnival of Carnivorous Clowns

CAVERN OF LOST SOULS - Hop aboard the Calico Mine Train and travel deep into a nightmare.  Witness a collection of the most tormented souls Ghost Town has to offer!

There be some nasty spirits waiting for each train load of fresh victims, so ALL ABOARD!  Hold on to them hats and glasses, because this here's the spookiest ride in the wilderness!

Cavern of Lost Souls

RED BEARD'S REVENGE - Pssssst!  Avast there!  It be too late to alter course, matey!  Here there be pirates lurking in every cove, waitin' to slit your throat like a pig!  A pirates life is full of adventure, danger and plundering.  Too bad you're on the receiving end of it all!

One of the most lavish mazes at Halloween Haunt, check out all of the swashbuckling horror these brigands have to offer.  Just heed this final warning... dead men... well, dead men are dead, and that sucks.

Red Beard's Revenge

THE ASYLUM - Hellllo, nurse!  Welcome to a walk on the wild side.  Okay, a walk on the completely nuts side of life - and death - in one of the most popular mazes in Haunt history.  Tucked away in the shadow of GhostRider is a condemned facility where the crazed lurk in the halls, struggle to break free of their restraints and lust for human interaction of the darkest kind.  And that's just the Knott's Administration Office!

Tighten that straight jacket and step into the darkness of this most terrifying experience that defines pure terror.  You'll be safe, though... the voices would never lie, because they love you...

The Asylum - Revisited

CURSE OF THE SPIDER - Ah, those itsy-bitsy spiders!  They crawled up the water spout, multiplied and grew since last Haunt.  Now they are awake, very hungry and more aggressive than ever!

You don't know the meaning of "arachnophobia" until you've braved the dark passageways and web-choked corridors of this popular Scary Farm maze.  What's that hiding in the darkness up ahead?  Or behind you, above you or underneath your feet?  Why not reach out and check for yourself... your two legs can certainly run faster than their eight, right?  Wrong.

Curse of the Spider

TERROR VISION (3D) - TV programming has never been so bloody good!  Change the channels and see what's on the boob tube!  Unhappy Days are here again, good friends!  Hang on to that remote (if it gets too intense, just change the channel - and pray for a kiddie show), as it may be the only thing that saves your butt in this virtual mess of chaos and terror.

Come spend some time in television land... just don't get so frightened that you lay your own cable!

Terror Vision - In 3D

FEARY TALES (3D) - Welcome one and all!  Y'all come have a ball here at the home of the sickest collection of children's stories-gone-Haunt!  Old Mother Goose (or was it Noose) never told you this version of your favorite kiddie tales...

Now the book's finally open and waiting for you to step on in.  Everyone likes a dead time story, right?  Curl up in bed, pull the covers up tight and pray to God the candle doesn't burn out, or else you will be lost forever in the darkest corners of your childhood fears...

Feary Tales

JAGUAR - TEMPLE OF SACRIFICE - Deep inside the ruins of the ancient pyramid in Fiesta Village is a terror beyond comprehension.  No, not the roller coaster at Jaguar (although the fact that people actually want to ride Jag is pretty freakin' scary), but rather, its queue, which takes on a life (death) of its own each October!

Can you make it alive past the monsters that lurk in the shadows, seeking human flesh for sacrifice (not virgin - that would be pushing it a bit far when it comes to the Haunt crowd).  Watch your step - this chilling little "scare experience" packs a mean punch!

Jaguar - Temple of Sacrifice

HAUNT 2005 SHOWS:
The Hanging - The single most popular show at Halloween Haunt, The Hanging is an annual send-up of current events, people in the news (noose) and anything else they can cram into Calico Square.  This is a must-see event that has become as much a part of the Scary Farm as the mazes and scare zones; it's a Haunt Classic that you'll be talking about for a long time.  The question is, are YOU ready for a hanging?
The Hanging

Hacks! Side-Splitting Improv - New this year in the Bird Cage Theatre is Hacks!  They're... well, they're hacks.  BUT... they will make you laugh so hard your sides will split (which is good, because there's still a big crack in our ass from laughing so hard last year at Haunt) and you will drop, crying and gasping for breath in the aisles.  And this is improv, which means anything goes, kids - with a Haunt crowd, this could be mighty interesting... older fans should NOT miss the late night show - the last of the night is always the best!
Hacks' Side-Splitting Improv

HAUNT 2005 SCARE ZONES:

Ghost Town - The granddaddy of all scare zones, this is the Haunt Original!  Find your way through Ghost Town, as fog billows through its streets and the wind howls in the trees and around the eaves of the age-old buildings.  Here you will find Haunt favorites such as the Green Goblin, Dustygeezer (yes, that IS a bullhorn in his pocket), Lucifer, The Green Witch, Outlaw, RiFF and more; too many to name!  You'll have to just come see all of them for yourself... unless they see you first!
Ghost Town

Silver Bullet Mine Town - In the shadow of Knott's newest roller coaster lies the Silver Bullet Mine Town (ah, those slick Marketing kids!) where you're going to come face-to-face with crazed hill folk and perhaps a werewolf or two!  Get them Silver Bullets ready; you're gonna need 'em (the gun kind... not the kind you're slamming back at your keyboard right now).  The talent in this new area comes primarily from The Swamp, so we do expect a phenomenal first year for this new area.
Silver Bullet Mine Town

The Gauntlet - Perhaps the one scare zone that has the largest "fan base" at Haunt, The Gauntlet is what happens to Camp Snoopy once the darkness comes.  Here, you will have the great displeasure of running into such creatures of the night as Bastard, the always fired-up Heckler, the amazing Kane and the most awesome Queen - Cerridwyn.  There's never an end to the antics and crazy scares happening nightly here - it's Halloween Haunt at its best!
The Gauntlet

The Dark Realm - Part of The Gauntlet that isn't really part of The Gauntlet, even though the Knott's Haunt site clearly says it's where the worst of The Gauntlet creatures have been banished to - which is really not accurate because there is some truly kick-ass talent heading to Dark Realm this year that will be missed in The Gauntlet even though they are part of The Gauntlet still - but not really part of it.  So when you pass through The Gauntlet, be sure to stop by and take in the terror found in the Dark Realm, which is... kinda in The Gauntlet, but isn't really a part of The Gauntlet.  Got it?
The Dark Realm

CarnEVIL - Behind the fun facade of The Boardwalk at Knott's lies an ugly, sinister entity... clowns.  Short ones, fat ones, skinny ones and tall ones.  These clowns are bent on terrifying you, making you fall to the floor in a fetal position and raising all hell in general.  Come one, come all to the CarnEVIL - face your worst fears and enjoy cotton candy at the same time!
